weiss blasts off via “brain fever”, where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics thrust our hero skywards. think of it as techno for funk-fuelled, italo-disco loving astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is only just underway. this intergalactic funk blueprint is explored further on the deeper and more melodious “you want a cigarette”, where weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant tb-303 lines, rush-inducing chords and clattering machine percussion. on “space ghetto (booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs and funk-fuelled synth-bass to the fore, weiss offers his own unique take on electrofunk. pleasingly fuzzy and tightly wrapped in the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto-house, it’s a typically far-sighted and attractive proposition.

d marc cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. now he comes to altered moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener -always on my mind-. there s space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of -blanket statement- demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. -mozaic- is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while -steamfunk- revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

after some excellent digital releases on editorial and ism as well as a fantastic remix of kraak & smaak on jalapeno as one half of allovers we are very happy to release i gemin s debut vinyl ep on pressed for time entitled the let s move ep , it features two superb deep house numbers in the trademark i gemin style - chunky, hypnotic and soulful. we were big fans of both tracks here at pft hq so we got head honchos yse and goshawk on remix duties. yse reversions it s about trust in a tougher, trackier style with some mood ii swing-esque spoken word vocal on the flip goshawk gets his talons into let s move upping the tempo slightly and adding a bumping bassline whilst keeping the soulful vibe intact.

with spring well and truly in the air and party season in step, mosaic records boss steve o sullivan launches mosaic s 38th release - joining forces with fellow londoner frazer campbell for a new studio collaboration. not content with letting the dust settle from his recent work alongside ricardo villalobos, o sullivan has stayed a little closer to his london home to work with frazer campbell for this latest tag team effort. a dextrous hand in the mix and producer in his own right, campbell has a passion for all things that sit on the deeper end of the house, techno and electronica spectrum. in his own words, thought emoting music is central to his mission having launched open recordings and elliot project records last year: a worthy sparring partner indeed. since the start of the year, the pair had their heads down focusing on finding a happy medium between deeply swung grooves and the airy influences of detroit - shaking out an interesting trio of tracks for their label debut. far from treading the obvious path, the main event a1 hypnotonic revels in a lighter touch as metronomic beat programming cycles endlessly to a held set of notes. off-kilter bass pulses, warped out vocals and effect splashes all intersect to keep the energy input constant as they capture one of those less frenzied moments where the very notion of time seems to hold still. make no mistake, this is a slow burn vibe. head to the flipside b1 soultonic to plunge yourself straight into hip twitching mode when the lights go down. a deep chord, syncopated hats and deftly tweaked synths echo as a full dose of shuffle inflicts its move. simple yet so effective, this track will not let you down. winding things back up a touch, the tougher edge of alleyway funk pushes the feeling on thanks to a thumping kick and a deft nod towards uk garage. met with a soft glisten of a rhodes piano and tweakish melody, the pair round things off in a boyant mood - fans of soul capsule and schatrax will no doubt agree. repeat play of this ep is recommended as its all the more rewarding for it.

the 3 release. 3 artists. 3 solid tracks. rex hansson has made a solid original version. you clearly hear his skills as a past percussionist. the beats together with skånska vocals, low key rhodes and some 303 knob twiddling make this track special and great. emil nyman. this mix is something. it’s tossing and turning from a metallic sound to the softest wood. from the deepest parts of the ocean we follow the pads and organ up in the sky. the b side is dedicated clark eng. a minimal offbeat version with low toms and rattling high sticks, claps and snares. the track is moving like a newcomen engine. the minor changes all the time makes it to a hypnotic minimal house track.

coming from the sound system scene in geneva, androo began to produce 80-90s infused digital dub as a teenager. his interest in jazz, new wave, dub and house gently collide in his studio a place he sees as a laboratory of experimentation here everything is mixed, dubbed and recorded live at the console. with this first ep release on second circle androo s music reveals a desire to avoid categorisation whilst displaying a clear love for percussive rhythms and emotive melodies. big tip! second circles first release of the summer features an ep of tracks by young producer androo from switzerland. having released on the sparring partner label which he co-runs with bony fly, androo has another release imminent on his second imprint poly dance .

for the fifth instance in their reissue series, echovolt records brings us four lush house gems by one of the most influential italian producers. carlo troja aka don carlos. don carlos started as a dj in the late 70s and debuted as a producer towards the end of the 80s with the cult single alone , which pretty soon became one of the anthems of the international deep house scene. inspiration ep focuses on some of his finest productions from the mid 90s that were only available on his rare aqua vinyl promo ep. this releases makes an effort to capture don carlos unique approach on classic house with lot of afro-american jazz sounds and ambient influences, that created a timeless deep jazzy house with a strong mediterranean twist on it!
